I don't remember who came up with the name "Spy Detectives," but it was me.
These are the first letters I ever exchanged, so it feels right to start my dive into the past here. My obsession for all things mystery was at its height, and when I discovered writing in code, I just gave myself up to the addiction and took anyone handy down with me. My best friend Katie was a natural victim.
I wonder how interested in spooky things Katie really was. My guess is, not much. She was a funny, competitive little athlete, always trying to get me to do flips on the monkey bars, or play tag, or swim in the deep end. Poor Katie! I must have been such a dull friend. All I ever wanted to do was spy on people.
There was this water heater closet in the basement of my old house. I'm not sure if this was just the style of water heater closets built in the 70s, but for some reason there was a screen on the wall connecting the family room and the closet, so if you sat by the water heater with the door closed, you could see and not be seen. In other words, spy. :) The closet had another winning feature. If you were small enough (and we were), you could squeeze around the water heater to the other side, where there was a second door leading to my very own bedroom. You can just imagine how excited Katie and I were when we made THAT discovery. The closet became an ideal place for us to hide our top-secret documents.
I love this note below for so many reasons. It could ONLY have been written by a 10 year old. The time stamp! The magnifying glass, revealing the all-important message, "I love to eat Fried eggs. They taste good too!" The "ghost"- or is it someone in costume??
Here's the body of the letter:
Dear Katie,
I think it is mysterious how when we looked at our papers (with the tree trunk) it seemed to look as though the tree trunks were twisting and turning! It's something we just MIGHT have to solve! Anyway, today was so embarrassing how we got sent to class from the computer lab! I'm glad it was our whole class and not just me and you though. Well, I have to go!
Sincerely, your friend, Jessie
"Henry, who is your best friend?" "John!" "Katie, who is your best friend?" "_____________"
Did you ever write in code? Tell us about it in the comments! Write back soon! -Jess
