Facebook Flashbacks- Flirting

Updated: Dec 28, 2020

Facebook was a game-changer.

There was no reply option when it first came out, so if you wanted to have a conversation, you just wrote on someone's wall, then they wrote on yours, then you wrote on theirs... it was very disjointed and hard to follow. Also, very public.

Flirting became this advertised thing, like, "Hey everybody! Here I am flirting with Bob, as you can all clearly see." Suddenly, you had to be very careful how you phrased things, because you wanted to flirt with boys online, but also you didn't want to flirt so much with one person that the other contenders assumed you were taken, so you had to keep things quite vague and low-key. Not easy to pull off.

Also, you started to get "tagged" in other people's photos, which could become tricky if you looked overly serious about the boy you were pictured with. I think we were all sensitive to that, and tried to not post anything too interesting unless we had permission from the other person involved.

Anyway, it's so much fun to look back on the random little snippets of flirting that I can find from that era.

Here's a pic I was tagged in. We all had a class together. The two people making silly "HMMMMMMmmmmm" expressions as they look over the menu ended up dating. Hint: it was me and Robert H.

What was awkward about dating Robert H. is that I was ALSO going out with the boy who sat on the other side of me in that same class! I didn't tell either of them, because we weren't serious enough for them to need to know details about who else I was going out with, so things got incredibly weird at times.

Here's a note from none other than Hunny Bunny!

You'll recognize the names of some of these next cute boys. The N is Ned from high school! My horrible kissing skills did not ruin our friendship. Chase is the boy I was dating at the same time as Robert H.

Here's another Rob. Very different from Robert H., but also cute.

Have any screenshots of Facebook flirting? We'd love to see them! WBS- Jess
