I failed my driver's test TWICE.
My dad tried to teach me to drive (in a stick-shift car!), but I kept screaming and killing the car and it was all too much for him, so he gave up. Then my church youth group leader took me out a few times. That helped a lot with basic things, but I still didn't dare to drive on the big roads.
My friends sailed happily through Driver's Ed.
Dude, this morning I went driving (I already told you) but it was so much fun! I wasn't scared at all, and I don't know why! Seriously, it was so much fun!
Fun. Right. More like a guarantee of death.
Halfway through my first driving exam, the test administrator smiled weakly at me and said, "Let's just consider this a really great opportunity to practice." I didn't make a second attempt until after high school. That time around, I only failed by a hair. It gave me the confidence to try again right away.
I remember being really cranky that day. I don't know what about, but I was grumbling the whole way there. Nicky said my mood was probably a good omen, that being mad would give me the determination to succeed. Then I found out my test administrator was a woman this time, and that made me really mad. Women are generaly so much harder on women than men are. By the time we got into the test, I was just fed up with the world and absolutely resolved to get the #&$% thing over with. Turns out, Nicky was right! I was too mad to be panicky, and too sick of it all to be sloppy, and as a result:
