I was raised on black and white movies. While you were watching "The Goonies," I was engrossed in films like "Sorry, Wrong Number" and "Rebecca." It made me very weird.
"Sorry, Wrong Number"
One thing that captivates me still about old movies is the glamour. Oh my gosh, festoons of satin draped on the walls, the windows... gleaming on beds and night-dresses... feathers, lace, fringe, impossibly excessive, sparkly jewelry, and the PHONES. Those tall, whirring rotary phones. I just want to light a cigarette (I don't smoke) in a looooong holder and use it to dial up the operator RIGHT NOW.
So it's hardly surprising that to me as a kid, the future HEIGHT of sophistication was going to be owning one of these bad boys:
Oooh, look how cute these ones are! I'm getting so distracted looking at adorable phones.
Anyway.
Life is so disappointing, isn't it? Just when I was old enough to finally own my dream phone, cell phones came into the picture. Eventually, life tied to a land-line just seemed unendurably blasé. So I asked Dad for a cell and for some reason he actually said yes. I was literally the only girl my age that I knew of who had one.
Needless to say, it was a novelty.
Zzzz. School is so boring. RING. Hello? I'd love to go out tonight! 7:00? Ok! C-ya then. (You're doing your makeup for the date.) DING DONG. You drive off into the night and have a wonderful date with the man of your dreams!
Ah, the good ol' days, when boys actually called girls on the phone in order to ask them out.
We were so jazzed about having a cell phone in the (friend) family, we even posed with it for some pictures!
Well, most of us were jazzed. This friend, maybe not as much:
Dude! You are getting a cell phone?? I wish I could get one!! But since I have no money, and if I go to EFY then I am going to be saving up from my job for that and not for a phone! Beside, I really don't have any need...
Don't have any any need? For a cell phone?? Psh. It's like she was all wise for her age or something.
What was your first phone, or your favorite phone? Share in the comments. :) WBS- Jess
