Blonde- Keeping it Classy in Zebra Print

Updated: Jul 24, 2020

Don't you just love looking back on your past fashion statements? Not embarrassing at all. You might cringe at a few old photos, but I bet you didn't wear pink pleather pants and a zebra-colored shirt on the first day of school. Just guessing.

Yesterday was my first day of school! I was feeling a little wild, so I wore my bumpy swirly shirt and my hot pink pants. I also wore a zebra fluffy bracelet and zebra shoes and painted my nails hot pink. It was awesome! I wore my hair down and I sprayed sparkles in it so it shimmered all day! It was so much fun.

Phew! Is it a little warm in here? ...Just me? Ok.

My friends were really sweet about the pink pants moment.

Jessie- (crafts-wafsty writing for you!)
Hi. Who exactly do you think you are? Rumblin' round in hot pink pants! ... You're too cute! Gorgeous, flowing blonde hair! Legally blonde!

There's lots to love about this letter. It warms my heart that this friend always tried to include something "craftsy-waftsy" in her notes, just to bug me. She knew how much I hated cutesy stuff. And then there's the inevitable death threat (did we pass a single note that wasn't violent in some way??) In fact, it's even been crumpled up to add to the undercurrent of menace. I love it.

Clothes weren't the only way I expressed myself at this time. My hair was a big statement, too.

Blonde, naturally. Well, obviously not naturally, given the big ol' block of roots I'm rocking here. Even the home-dye I used to achieve this super-bleached look was expensive for a 14 year old.

If you think this hairdo is fancy, you should have seen my church-friend, "Jenny." Holy smokes, she once told me she spent 3 HOURS on her hair EVERY DAY. To be fair, it really was a masterpiece of perfectly curled ringlets. She had brown hair almost down to her waist, and she curled that thick mop section by tiny section. Astonishing dedication, but that's high school for you.

There is a downside to any look you go for, and that is the inevitable judgment you'll attract. I've worn every style known to man, so I've experienced all the labels. The words thrown around during this period hurt me the worst: vain, airhead, shallow. I tried not to let it bother me, but I was young, and these were people I cared about. Their words just did not compute with what I knew to be true about myself.

To cope with the confusion, I posted these pictures side-by-side in my journal as a reminder to not lose sight of who I was on the inside, while I was having so much fun with the outside.

What was your most... memorable hairdo/outfit growing up? Make me feel better about myself by commenting below. :) Write back soon! -Jess
