Sweet Sixteen

Updated: Aug 29, 2020

Turning sixteen was exciting and terrifying at the same time.

Interestingly, what makes sixteen a milestone for most teenagers, getting a driver's license, wasn't even on the table for me. I was such a completely inexperienced, panicky driver that I had zero hope of getting my license any time soon. No, the significance of this birthday was all about dating.

I had decided long before not to date or kiss anyone before my 16th birthday. Most of us girls were waiting till then.

That was a hard promise to keep to myself. There just seemed to be adorable boys everywhere I went! But 16 finally came, and suddenly- gulp! I was out of excuses.

Right away, getting kissed was on the agenda.

The kissing thing became a complicated issue. As much I as longed to be smooching some of the cute crushes of my acquaintance, I didn't really have a desire to be smothered in some hot and heavy commitment. But how do you go about kissing a guy you're not seriously dating? Turns out, pretty easily, but more on that later. :)

I don't remember much about my birthday that year, apart from the weight it carried.

I'm 16! Holy smokes! It seems only yesterday I was counting down the years till I would be this old. I can date! How insane. I've had an awesome week.

Josh made me a cake with pink frosting...

Cute!! I don't remember him doing that. What a sweetie. I had such fun friends.

(Midge gave me a) free lunch at Wok on Wheels. Sweet!

Wok on Wheels was such a thing with us. I mean, who doesn't love Chinese takeout??

I can't tell you how many of our old notes make reference to that great restaurant.

What were you most looking forward to when you turned 16? WBS- Jess
